What is Subsidence Underpinning?
Subsidence underpinning is a construction technique used to stabilize structures that have been affected by subsidence. Subsidence refers to the gradual sinking or settling of the ground, which can lead to uneven or unstable foundations for buildings. Subsidence can be caused by various factors, including soil erosion, groundwater movement, mining activities, or natural geological processes.
Strengthening and Reinforcing
When subsidence affects a building, it can result in structural damage, such as cracks in walls or floors, uneven floors, or doors and windows that no longer close properly. Subsidence underpinning involves strengthening or reinforcing the foundation of the affected structure to prevent further movement and stabilize the building.
Stable Foundations
Underpinning typically involves excavating sections of the existing foundation and then filling those excavated areas with concrete or other structural materials to provide additional support. This effectively transfers the weight of the building to deeper, more stable soil layers, bypassing the weakened or subsided sections of the foundation.
