Structural Steels
Whether as part of the basement, superstructure, façade retention or the enabling works, BH Basements undertake the full scope of installing structural steels. We will engage with in house fabrication drawings, procurement of steel through to the required temporary works and demolition to enable the steel installation. All is managed and coordinated by the BH Team to ensure all design parties comments are picked up and incorporated into each revision of the design of the fabrication package.
What is Structural Steel?
Structural steel is a type of steel specifically manufactured and designed to be used in construction projects for creating load-bearing structures. Again as with the concrete frame BHB would either form the buildings superstructure frame from structural steel work or RC frame and very often a combination of the two. It is one of the most commonly used materials in construction due to its strength, durability, and versatility. Structural steel is primarily composed of iron and varying amounts of carbon, which gives it its strength and allows it to be easily welded or bolted together to form complex structures.
Key features and characteristics of structural steels in construction
Structural steels are designed to have high strength-to-weight ratios, meaning they can bear heavy loads while being relatively lightweight. This characteristic makes them ideal for constructing large buildings and structural floors
Structural steels have a high degree of ductility, which allows them to bend without breaking under stress. This property is crucial for absorbing energy in the event of seismic activity or other dynamic forces.
Versatility
The versatility of structural steels means it can be fabricated into various shapes and sizes to suit different construction needs. This versatility allows architects and engineers to design innovative and aesthetically pleasing structures.
Ease of Construction
Structural steels are prefabricated off-site and transported to the construction site, where they can be quickly assembled. This speeds up the construction process, reduces labour costs, and minimises disruptions to surrounding areas.
Recyclability
Structural steel is highly recyclable, making it an environmentally sustainable choice for construction projects. At the end of a structure’s lifespan, the steel can be recycled and reused in other applications, reducing the demand for new raw materials.
Common applications of structural steel in construction include:
Structural steel is commonly used for constructing the frames of high-rise buildings, commercial structures, industrial facilities, and residential developments.
Overall, structural steel plays a crucial role in modern construction, providing the strength, durability, and versatility needed to create safe and efficient structures of all types and sizes.
